Discover Gao Thai Kitchen

Walking into Gao Thai Kitchen on West Main Street in Ramsey feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot that quietly knows it’s doing something right. The dining room is casual and welcoming, the kind of place where you notice families sharing plates, couples leaning over bowls of noodles, and solo diners happily scrolling while waiting for takeout. Located at 63 W Main St, Ramsey, NJ 07446, United States, this restaurant has become a regular stop for locals who want Thai food that tastes thoughtful rather than rushed.

The first time I ate here, I watched the kitchen work while waiting for my order, and it was clear there’s a system behind the scenes. Sauces are built in layers, not poured from a bottle, and dishes come out with consistent balance. That attention matters because Thai cooking relies on harmony-sweet, salty, sour, and heat all pulling their weight. According to the Thai Trade Center USA and culinary educators at the Culinary Institute of America, authentic Thai cuisine depends heavily on fresh herbs, proper heat control, and precise seasoning. You can taste that discipline here.

The menu covers the classics but doesn’t feel generic. Pad Thai arrives with springy noodles and a tamarind-forward sauce that avoids the overly sugary shortcut many places take. Green curry is aromatic rather than overpowering, with coconut milk that tastes freshly reduced instead of flat. On one visit, I ordered their basil stir-fry at a medium spice level, and the heat crept in slowly, letting the garlic and chili do their work without numbing everything else. That’s a small detail, but it shows confidence in technique.

What stands out is consistency. I’ve eaten here both during quiet weekday lunches and packed weekend dinners, and the quality doesn’t slip. A friend of mine, who previously worked in a Thai restaurant in Queens, pointed out how evenly cooked the proteins are-no rubbery chicken, no overcooked shrimp. That’s usually a sign of good wok timing and proper prep. Research from food service studies published by the National Restaurant Association notes that consistency is one of the top drivers of repeat visits, and Gao Thai Kitchen seems to understand that instinctively.

Reviews from Ramsey residents often mention how accommodating the staff is, especially when it comes to spice levels or dietary needs. Vegetarian options are clearly marked, and tofu substitutions are handled with care rather than treated as an afterthought. While no restaurant is perfect, there can be short waits during peak hours, and parking on Main Street can get tight. Still, those are manageable trade-offs for food that feels made with intention.

Another reason this place works is its role in the local food scene. Instead of trying to be trendy, it focuses on being reliable. That approach builds trust. When people leave positive reviews talking about returning again and again, that says more than flashy décor ever could. The kitchen doesn’t chase extremes; it refines fundamentals.

If you’re familiar with Thai cuisine, you’ll appreciate the restraint and balance. If you’re newer to it, the menu is approachable without watering things down. That middle ground is hard to hit, and it’s why this restaurant has quietly earned its reputation. For anyone exploring dining options in Ramsey, this spot fits naturally into the rotation, whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch or settling in for a relaxed dinner with friends.

  • Since we are avid Thai food fans, we were on a quest like Don Quixote. I read the google tea leaves and we ended up here. Spot on, flavors galore. No doubt this should be your next stop. Staff was lovely, place was clean, platings were beautiful. We will be back.

  • Excellent Thai Restaurant! From the moment we entered everyone greeted us. The restaurant and even the menus are sparkling clean. The food was served promptly and at the right temperature. It was very tasty as well. We enjoyed all of our dishes and the service was excellent! We are happy we discovered it as we are new to the area!

  • Having passed by this establishment for the past few months being new to the area, my wife and I decided to have dinner here and were very impressed with the overall experience. The service was prompt and pleasant and always making sure we had full drinks and needing anything. We started with the sampler appetizer which included spring rolls, curry puffs, chicken satay and spare ribs. Each item were super hot and tender. The side sauces were a nice touch. Our entrees were level 5 heat chicken ka prow for me and a chicken with Thai broccoli and noodles for my wife. The heat was perfect and the portions were large and overall very tasty dishes. We couldn’t pass up dessert so we went with the chocolate peanut butter sundae and the homemade chocolate lava cake. Both were delicious and decadent. I would recommend here without hesitation and look forward to going back.

  • The food was amazing, pricing was fair, service was okay, (the server was new). We sat outside on the patio and had a wonderful meal. Two different noodle dishes and a bowl of incredible coconut soup with mushrooms. The presentation was excellent, the ingredients were fresh and everything was delicious! The Thai tea with lychees was fantastic as well. When staying in the area, we will definitely return.

  • Update Sept 2025: Maybe I was too harsh in my initial review. I have gone there a few more times and noted excellent service and Thai food designed for the local palette.Try it!! Original Review: I normally only review when there is exceptional food and service. However, I earlier provided a review that was an exception to that rule because of supply problems that were probably out of their control (Mussels). They had advised on multiple occasions that they were not available. The food here is on the sweeter side and some Thai Food lovers may not appreciate it. I give that a pass as the local clientele probably likes the “adulterated” flavor but choosing wisely and consulting with staff still allows an excellent more authentic Thai meal. The issue of unavailable mussels has since been addressed and it’s one of the best I have had anywhere.Try it and Pad See Ew as well. Delicious and credit to management for addressing promptly.

  • We were visiting the area and didn’t want to eat at a chain restaurant. Very happy with this quaint Thai restaurant with lovely outdoor seating. The menu gives you just enough to order a good amount of food. The dishes were very tasty and authentic. They have an onsite parking lot that makes it much easier to access the outdoor eating area. The noodle dishes were delicious and so was the calamari but the real dish of the night was the whole snapper with ginger sauce and shrimp. It’s great. We finished with dessert and ordered mango sticky rice which was excellent. Highly recommend it here ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
